Four essential steps to take when preparing for a Business Negotiation
Seek out as much information as you can about the other side. Who are they, what are their motivations, what is at stake, what do they want from you. The more you know the better you will be able to make your moves.
Question your arguments and assumptions
Be critical with yourself and question your assumptions about the other party and your negotiation arguments. If you think that the other party is only negotiating with you and no one else then think why that would be the case and how would it change the negotiation if it that was not the case.
Run your ideas past a colleague
Before going into a negotiation it is a good idea to run your ideas, arguments and moves past a colleague. You want to run it past someone who will give you true feedback as it is crucial for the success of your negotiation.
Don’t be afraid of negotiating
Often people find negotiating stressful and awkward. If you are however well prepared you should be able to face the negotiation without fear but with confidence.
